FRS is of little assistance unless another user on the same channel is reasonably close to you. Therefore calling for assistance on the radio may not be the best use of this resource. If you know others are near then call but limit that calling. If there is no immediate response switch to channel 1, no tone code and monitor that channel. Our search group, if they are equipped with FRS, will call from time to time on that channel using your name. Respond when you hear them and follow their directions.

A little preparation can go a long way to make these steps unnecessary or at least put you in the best position to have a good outcome should you get lost or become injured.

Be Prepared; Ensure You Have a Plan
  • Taking a day hike off the beaten track?
Take these basic precautions and have a safe day.
  • Dress appropriately for the weather
  • Take extra weather protective clothing
  • Have a map and compass
  • Familiarize yourself with the area
  • Locate yourself on the map at regular intervals
  • Tell a friend or relative where you are going and when you expect to be back.
  • Tell them to phone 911 if you don't return on schedule.
  • Let them know when you are back or if your plans change.
